Nelson Nets Career-High 24 Points In ECU’s 66-52 Win

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Three Pirates scored in double-figures to lead East Carolina past Marshall, 66-52, at the Cam Henderson Center on Wednesday night. Junior forward Shae Nelson led all scorers with a career-high 24 points, while junior guard Janesha Ebron tied her career-best with nine assists.

In addition to a career-high 24-point performance, Nelson also added six rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. She led a trio of double-figure scorers in Abria Trice (14 points) and Jada Payne (11 points). Tatiana Chapple led the Pirates with seven rebounds, while Ondrea Shaw added a team-best three blocks. Ebron dished out a career-high tying nine assists to go along with three boards and two blocks.

East Carolina shot 42.1-percent from the field in the first half after the Pirates connected on 16-of-38 field goals. The ECU defense limited Marshall to just 18.2-percent shooting as the Thundering Herd tallied just four field goals on 22 attempts. The Herd was hampered from three-point shooting as well, connecting on 1-of-12 shots to net a three-point field goal percentage of 8.3.

The Pirates took an early lead on back-to-back buckets by Chapple and Trice to take a 4-0 lead over Marshall. The ECU defense held the Thundering Herd scoreless for nearly four minutes of action and after taking a 6-0 advantage and never looked back. The Pirates led throughout the contest and extended their lead to as many as 22 (37-15) in the first half. East Carolina continued its scoring surge behind 16 points from Nelson and 12 from Trice as the Pirates took a 40-19 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Marshall opened the second half on a 10-2 run and eventually cut the Pirates’ lead to eight (45-37) at 12:27. However, East Carolina fought back and the Pirate defense held the Herd scoreless for nearly five minutes to push their lead back up to 17 (56-39) at 7:18. The Pirates led by as many as 25 points in the game (64-39) and went on to defeat Marshall 66-52 handing the Thundering Herd their eighth straight loss as ECU won its sixth in seven contests.

As a team, ECU shot 40.6-percent from the field, while Marshall shot 32.7-percent. East Carolina held the edge in rebounds 42-35. The Pirates also led the Herd in assists, 19-10. East Carolina forced Marshall into 23 turnovers and the Pirates tallied 22 points off of turnovers.

The Thundering Herd was led offensively by Aja Sorrells’ nine points. Suporia Dickens was Marshall’s leading rebounder with eight boards, while Norrisha Victrum tallied a team-best six assists.
