POLICE: 74-Year-Old Georgia Man's Brakes Failed, Caused 4 Vehicle Wreck

Police said a four vehicle crash on a busy street happened after the brakes failed in a motorhome.

Greenville Police said 74-year-old Thomas Whiddon of Glennville, Georgia was driving the Winnebago motorhome that wrecked with three other cars around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Greenville Boulevard and Evans Street.

Whiddon told police he tried slowing for traffic when he realized the braked failed.

The initial traffic report shows Whiddon tried coasting through traffic, and tried to guide the motorhome to the curb, but could not avoid three vehicles on the way.

Police said 3 people were taken to Vidant Medical Center, including a 5-year-old, and all had minor injuries.

Whiddon has been charged with improper equipment.

Greenville police responded to a multiple vehicle crash involving a Winnebago motorhome and 3 other vehicles about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Greenville Boulevard and Evans Street.

Cpl. Broadwell with Greenville Police says the driver of the motorhome was headed east on Greenville Boulevard and said his brakes failed and he hit 3 vehicles.

Broadwell says 3 people were taken to Vidant Medical Center including a 5 year old and all had minor injuries.

The driver is charged with improper equipment.

The scene was cleared within an hour.
