Charges Being Brought In Fatal Pitt County Moped Crash

A retired master sergeant with the Air Force was killed in Wednesday morning's moped accident in Ayden.

Police Chief Barry Stanley says 68-year-old Shephard Spruill of Grifton died in the 10:30 a.m. accident on Highway 11.

Stanley says 69-year-old Andrew Little of Stokes will be charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Police say Spruill's moped was traveling south on Highway 11 near Old Snow Hill Road when it was struck from behind by Little's Chevy S-10 pickup truck.

The man died at the accident scene.

A moped driver was killed in an accident on Highway 11 in Pitt County this morning.

Ayden Police Chief Barry Stanley says the accident happened around 10:30 a.m. just south of the intersection with Old Snow Hill Road.

The chief says the moped was struck from behind by a Chevy S-10 pickup truck while the two were heading south.

Names of the victim and the other driver have not yet been released.

One lane of the highway was closed as crews responded to the accident.
