Months After Court Ruling, Some Sweepstakes Cafes Remain Open, Enforcement Varies

It's been three months since the NC Supreme Court ruled sweepstakes games are illegal, and hundreds of the businesses are still open across the state.

This Grifton Cafe closed down in December, reopened, and appears to have shut down again. But we checked in other areas of Pitt County Friday and cafes remain open.

Wake County's district attorney said enforcement will begin Monday.

Cumberland County deputies raided cafes, and now every cafe in the county shut down.

Local authorities have been left to enforce the law, and operators have have stayed open saying new software makes their games legal.

The software developer V-S-2 sent out a press release saying it has no intention to break the law, but the legislature needs to clarify if the software makes the cafes legal.
