School, Gymnastics Center Put On Lockdown After Gun Scare

Greenville police say a school and a gymnastics center were placed on lockdown this morning for about an hour after a teacher spotted two armed teens.

It started around 9:40 a.m. when a several people saw the teens near Childdren's Montessori School on Hungate Drive.

Lt. Carlton Williams says the two told one of the people that they were BB guns, but 911 was called out of precaution after the two went into some nearby woods.

Williams says one of the teens was found with an airsoft pistol, which police say they use themselves in training.

Rose Gymnastics Center, which is located across the street from the school, was also put on lockdown.

Williams says while shooting the pistols in the city may not be illegal, he says if one of the teens had turned toward one of their officers they would have no idea if it was a real weapon or not.

The police lieutenant says in light of recent events in the city, and in other areas, they take every event seriously.

Williams says no charges were filed against the teen and he has since been released.
