Scorekeeper, Children Injured After Tents Blow Down During Softball Tourney

A scorekeeper and several children were injured after storms blew down three tents during a Pitt County softball tournament this afternoon.

Strong winds tore down the tents at the Sara Law Complex around 2:00 p.m. during the Southeastern Regional Babe Ruth Softball Tournament in Winterville.

Authorities at first thought there were up to 15 injured, but it was quickly learned those hurt only had minor injuries.

Pitt County Softball League director Bo Batts says there were some 300 to 400 people around the complex when the storm unexpectedly came up.

Batts says Morgan Davis,a 19-year-old scorekeeper, was transported to Vidant Medical Center, while five other people were checked out at the scene by rescue crews. Two girl players suffered gashes over their eyes, another had something fall on her leg, but she's okay.

At the time, two games for girls ten and under were being played.

The director says he's never seen anything like this. Batts says it started to rain and then out of nowhere there was a strong wind gust.

He said the tents were used by scorekeepers and vendors. Batts says when the rain started, many headed to them for shelter.

One mother said the wind was so strong that the girls on the field were starting to blow over as they ran off the field.

Batts says the tents will not be going back up.
