Homeless North Carolina Teen To Attend ECU In The Fall

An incoming freshman at East Carolina University has quite a story to tell.

She will be the first in her family to get a diploma. On top of that, she's graduating with honors and she's done it living out of a truck that won't start.

Miranda Hurt will graduate from Ben L. Smith High School in Guilford County this weekend. She has kept her cap and gown in a plastic bag, folded on the dashboard of the family truck since she got it a few weeks ago.

Hurt's family was evicted when her mother's paychecks couldn't cover their bills. Miranda's part-time job wasn't enough and her brother can't find work.

Miranda says she cares about how far her education will take her.

Since Miranda and her family's story came out, the community has pitched in to help them.

Congratulations to Miranda on becoming an ECU pirate!
