Cherry Village, Colorado -- Greenville's Adam Stephenson opened match play with a 1up victory over Mexico's Carlos Ortiz to advance to the final 32 at U.S. Amateur Golf Championships.
Stephenson started the tournament as one of 312 players vying for the title of U.S. Amateur champion. The former ECU golfer shot consecutive 70's in the opening rounds of stroke play to advance to the match play field of 64 before winning his first match head-to-head.
Stephenson, who played high school golf at J.H. Rose, will face Chris Williams of Moscow, Idaho in the second round of match play Thursday morning at Cherry Hills Country Club.
Tournament play continues through the weekend and wraps up with the final match Sunday morning.
