The race is heating up between an incumbent and new challenger for one city's mayor seat.

Current Mayor Allen Thomas and challenger Tom Best debated Tuesday night at the C.M. Eppes Recreation Center.

Tuesday marked the first face-off for the candidates.

"Mainly I'm selling myself," said Best before the debate. "There will be opportunities to probably say where we are different... In certain ways, how I would have voted differently."

Incumbent candidate Thomas said the debate was an opportunity to highlight the positive changes in Greenville.

"There's been a lot of great things going on Greenville and it's going to be a good time to talk about the progress we're making here," said Thomas. "At some point the talk has to end and your ability to get things done has to begins."

One-stop voting starts Thursday, October 17th and ends Saturday, November 2nd.

Election day is Tuesday, November 5th.

The Benevolence Corps sponsored this and two other municipal debates between Greenville candidates.
