The Greenville City Council voted to spend another quarter-million dollars on major improvements to the Dream Park in west Greenville.
The vote at Thursday night's meeting came after the city was denied a $250,000 grant from the state. The City Council voted in February to appropriate the $534,000 to help fund improvements to the park on Chestnut Street in Greenville.
The $250,000 voted on Thursday night is in addition to the money approved in February and will complete the funding of the park.
City Councilman Calvin Mercer was the only one who opposed the funding. He said in an email that the grant money could be issued this summer and the council should have waited to see if that would come through.
"The Dream Park would not have been jeopardized by waiting TWO MONTHS AND THREE DAYS to find out if we got the grant," Mercer wrote in the email early Friday. "In this budget environment--in fact, in ANY budget environment--it makes very good sense to me to keep our grant application current for this short period."
