CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- Former East Carolina assistant golf coach and letterman Frank Adams III will play in his first PGA Tour event after he shot a 4-under-par 66 at Carolina Golf Club in Charlotte on Monday to qualify for this week’s Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Country Club. He will tee-off Thursday at 9 a.m. alongside Brian Harman and Kevin Kisner.
Adams was one of four golfers to earn a spot in the PGA event.Part of a 10-man playoff, Adams birdied the fifth hole to earn him the third birth for the event. He shot 35 on the front nine and 31 on the back, recording five birdies and one bogey.
Adams has been playing professionally since 2002 as part of the eGolf Professional Tour, formerly known as the Tarheel Tour. He has won six-career eGolf Tour events, the last of which came at the Morocco Classic in 2010. Adams ranks second on the tour’s all-time wins list.
This season marks the 10th anniversary of the WellsFargo Championship, which has become one of the premier golf events in the world. During the past nine years, Quail Hollow Club has welcomed all of the world’s top 25 players and the tournament’s list of champions is consistently considered among golf’s elite.
Eight of the nine previous tournament champions have committed to play in this year’s event --- 2003 David Toms, 2005 Vijay Singh, 2006 Jim Furyk, 2007 Tiger Woods, 2008 Anthony Kim, 2009 Sean O’Hair, 2010 Rory McIlroy, 2011 Lucas Glover.
