Five Year Old Hit By Car Improving At Vidant Medical Center

A five-year-old girl who was hit by a car nearly two weeks ago is improving at Vidant Medical Center.

The Highway Patrol says Amber Jones darted across the bridge on US 13 at the Greene-Pitt County line on May 6th and was hit by a car.

Troopers say the child was fishing with her family when the accident happened. The family moved across the bridge to fish on the other side, the trooper said, when Amber ran back across the road to get a bag of potato chips she had left behind. It was as she was running back to her family that she was hit by the car.

The girl had been in critical condition right after the accident. The hospital said Friday her condition had now improved to fair condition.

Troopers say there was no way the driver could have avoided hitting the child. The driver reported slowing down when she saw the family on the side of the road, but the child ran out at the exact wrong time.
