A suspect is behind bars on several theft charges related to recent thefts at the ECU Rec Center.
Winterville Police arrested 23-year-old Brett Hartnett and charged him with a total of seven offenses, including financial card theft and transaction and larceny. Four of those charges are felonies.
Just last month ECU Police said thieves were having a field day inside the East Carolina University Rec Center and they were doing all they could to find the person or persons responsible.
There are 21,000 members registered at the ECU Rec Center, not counting guests.
There are lockers available for gym-goers to store their personal belongings, but police say some are not securing them with locks. So thieves just look for open lockers and steal the items inside.
Officers say cubbies on the exercise floor don't have doors and are open to thieves as well. Rental locks and lockers are available to help secure belongings, but they say it's up to the members to actually use them.
Police have not said if more arrests are expected.
