Hundreds Mourn Slain Toddler, Jesse Adams

Mourners filled a Greenville church this afternoon, remembering a toddler who was killed by his own father this past weekend.

Jesse Adams' funeral was held at the New Destiny Pentecostal Holiness Church in Greenville. The three year old was shot and killed Friday at his father's Grifton area home. J.C. Adams died Sunday after authorities say he shot himself.

Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks told those in the church it doesn't feel at all right. "At age three, his work on earth was finished, and he's received his reward in heaven today," Elks said.

After the funeral, 300 balloons were released over the church.

The family of Jesse Adams continues to mourn the loss of their three-year-old boy after a heartbreaking murder-suicide in Grifton last week.

Dan Yesenosky was at the visitation service for Jesse Wednesday night at the New Destiny Pentecostal Holiness Church. The horrific story of how the three-year-old lost his life was not the focus at the visitation service and will not be at his funeral Thursday. Instead, people gathered to remember the happiness Jesse brought them and the things he enjoyed most.

One of Jesse's favorite things was John Deere tractors. The John Deere company even donated one to the church for Wednesday's viewing and Thursday's funeral. His love for trucks and tractors will be the focus of Thursday's funeral, Pastor Marc Swanner said.

Swanner, the senior pastor at New Destiny Pentecostal Holiness Church, remembered Jesse as a "wonderful little boy."

"A joy to have in our church. He was a member here, loved coming. He played in the nursery. He just loved being a part of this family," Swanner said.

Jesse's great-aunt, Colleen Burt, also shared her memories of the little boy.

"You just never saw him unhappy. He brought a smile to everyone's face," Burt said.

Jesse's funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at the church on East Firetower Road in Greenville. Swanner says they will continue to focus on the positives. Jesse's name is already listed on a glass memorial inside the church.
