The family of a Winterville woman who was injured in Wednesday morning's deadly car accident near Grifton says the woman is "lucky to be alive".
Ranita Gaskins was heading south on Highway 11 to work at Lenoir Community College when troopers say a minivan pulled out in front of her from Grifton Hugo Road.
Killed in the wreck was Marina Rivera-Medrano of Snow Hill, while troopers said Gaskins broke her wrist in the crash.
But family members say the Winterville woman was seriously injured. Her son says his mother has a fractured skull, a fractured neck, a broken collar bone, a lacerated liver, broken ribs, a broken knee cap, and broken toes. She remains at Vidant Medical Center in fair condition.
The 65-year-old Gaskins is a library assistant at LCC's Learning Resources Center.
State troopers say a mother was killed and her teenage daughter injured in a morning accident in Lenoir County.
The Highway Patrol says Marina Rivera-Medrano, 37, of Snow Hill was killed in the Highway 11 crash.
Troopers say the woman's minivan was heading east on Grifton Hugo Road when it pulled out in front of an oncoming vehicle heading south on 11.
Ranita Gaskins of Winterville was driving the other vehicle. Troopers say she broke her wrist in the accident.
Rivera-Medrano's 13-year-old daughter was also injured. She was treated and released from Vidant Medical Center.
A busy four-lane highway is open once again after a deadly crash Wednesday morning.
Trooper Gary Ipock with the Highway Patrol in Kinston confirmed one person was killed in a wreck on Highway 11 at Hugo Grifton Road.
The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. near the Lenoir and Pitt County line when a minivan pulled onto Highway 11 and was hit by oncoming car. The driver of the minivan was killed, troopers say.
Ipock says two other people were injured and were taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. One of the injured is a child who was in the minivan.
One lane of traffic in each direction of Highway 11 was closed after the accident. The highway reopened around 8:30 a.m.
