EastCare Celebrates 25 Years

University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina is celebrating 25 years of EastCare's emergency air transport service. A celebration is scheduled for Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

When EastCare started in 1985, it used its one helicopter to transport 54 patients in five weeks. In 2009, its fleet transported more than 10,000 patients.

EastCare has more than 100 employees on staff and contracts for ten pilots and four mechanics with Air Methods. EastCare's fleet consists of three helicopters, six mobile intensive care units, one advanced life support unit and three basic life support units.

Tuesday's event will also celebrate the upgrade of EastCare's helicopters.

East Care flies over my home each time it lands at Beaufort County Medical Center. It gives me a warm feeling whenever I hear it first and then see it on it's way to save another life. Congrats!

I wanted to say thank-you for all that you do. My little girl took her first helicopter ride when she was only 2 hours old. East Care picked her up and took her to PICU where she spent 10 days, and made a full recovery. We are so blessed to have East Care and PCMH here in eastern NC.

This service is PRICELESS. A special thank you to the EastCare team for all that you do! You are the shining star of PCMH and I sincerely appreciate all that each of you do everyday. Our community and patients are so lucky to have such a wonderful team. When I see one of the blue flightsuits I am in awe of what you each do. You are each so dedicated to your job and true heros for the hospital. Have 25th!

As a Locums/Independent Contractor, I have covered Pediatrics for several hospitals "down East" for a number of years (and am covering one now). EastCare and Pitt have been a God-send for the people of Eastern N.C. - including members of my own family. They are a mere phone-call away, and when I really need "the purple bird" to get a very sick baby/child out, they get the job done. God bless and blue skies forever to the entire team. You do a fantastic job!!!

I have worked with all of you. (28 years at PCMH) I continue to be proud of each of you in the air or on the ground transport. No doubt we have made a difference. I do remember the night the chopper went down. I was in the ED. Let's all take a minute to remember Dr. Jack Allison, he was the great leader. I still remember him as the greatest.

You folks that are concerned about the price of a helicopter ride, need to go window shopping for one of these tricked out rescue jobs. It aint your daddy's pimped ride. Then there's the constant maintenance, you would not even. I can name a number of folks that I know that this program has saved. God bless you guys for the situations that you place yourselves into volunteerely to save others.

I have the honor of flying with these incredibly dedicated folks from time to time and just want to say thank you for all you do. From the pilots to the flight nurses, paramedics, ground crew, ENC is blessed to have this team. Congratulations for 25 years and one of the best safety records in the nation!

Good grief "concerned". Is your life or the lives of your loved ones not worth 10 grand? If my son or daughter, husband, or any of my close friends needed EastCare, the last dang thing on my mind would be the cost. A price can not be put on a loved one's life. Very tacky comment when these folks put their lives in danger EVERY time they go up with only one goal. TO SAVE A LIFE. One day it may be your own. Remember that.
