A group of 18 volunteers from the Eastern Red Cross region packed up vehicles Thursday morning to head to New York. The group first surveyed the need along our coast before deciding more volunteers were needed in the northeast. Several volunteers in this group have been on trips for the Rd Cross before including Cynthia Swarner from Washington. She says other they'll provide food, clothing, shelter, and emotional support.
"We need mental health people like crazy. That's a lot of baggage. it's not just the physical, it's the emotional baggage that's huge," said Swarner.
Once the group arrives in White Plains, New York, they will get their assignments which could take them to New York City or New Jersey where homeless residents will be in shelters.
