IRVING, Texas – East Carolina junior Drew Reynolds was named Conference USA Pitcher-of-the-Week after picking up both victories in the series win at Tulane the league office announced Monday.
For Reynolds it is his second career honor and first as a pitcher. Last year he was named C-USA Hitter-of-the-Week (Mar. 12) after helping the Pirates to three wins and the DRASH Alabama Classic Championship.
A preseason Stopper-of-the-Year Watch List candidate, Reynolds notched a pair of wins over the weekend helping ECU to a series win on the road at Tulane. Reynolds, who improved to 3-1 on the season, earned his first victory Friday night in the Pirates' 3-2 win in 13 innings. The right-hander tossed 3.1 perfect innings of relief, tying his career-high in strikeouts with six – the same number that starter Jeff Hoffman had in his 9.2 innings of work. He picked up the series-clinching win Sunday, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings where he struck out two in ECU's 4-2 victory. In two games on the weekend, he tallied 5.0 scoreless frames with eight punchouts and two walks.
At the plate he batted .300 (6-for-20) with an RBI, a double and a run scored, posting a pair of multi-hit games at Tulane, including a season-high four Saturday. On the season he owns a team-best 1.44 ERA in 16 appearances with six saves, 26 strikeouts, 12 walks and has allowed eight runs (four earned) on 17 hits in 25.0 innings pitched.
Reynolds is the third Pirate hurler to take home player-of-the-week honors this season following David Lucroy (Mar. 11) and Jeff Hoffman’s (Apr. 1) selections.
The Pirates will be back in action on Tuesday, Apr. 16 when they play host to No. 25 UNC Wilmington at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. (ET).
