GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women’s basketball team kicked off the 2013-14 season with its first official practice Tuesday afternoon at the Smith-Williams Center.
The Pirates are approximately five weeks away from their season-opener against Virginia Intermont on Friday, November 8, at noon in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
Prior to the inaugural practice which marked the first-ever held on the women’s basketball team’s practice court inside the Smith-Williams Center, head coach Heather Macy spoke to the media about the upcoming season. The following are selected quotes from her interviews:
Head Coach Heather Macy
On the plan for the first day of practice:
“The biggest thing we want to make sure is that it’s high energy and competitive. You’re trying to instill a lot of the intangibles. It’s less about the offenses and defenses, and more about the team chemistry and our work ethic.”
On the goals in the preseason that need to be accomplished:
“We’ve got this season divided up. It’s in segments, then we’ll have an off day, then we’ll have the other segment. It’s small goals divided into many segments of, ‘This is what we need to accomplish during these practices.’ We build that all the way through the entire season, but it starts now.”
On the loss of four seniors and three starters:
“We’ve got some core players from a year ago coming back. We had two redshirt players in Abria (Trice) and Jada (Payne), who know our stuff, so I count them as returners. I’m really pleased with the way the newcomers have been able to contribute, and how the returners have been able to help our newcomers become acclimated and adjust to the environment.”
On last year’s 20-win season and what momentum that brings into the 2013-14 season:
“I think confidence is hanging around. Confidence breeds more confidence. The kids were able to experience that success last year and that’s going to help us. Now that’s just a natural progression and I’ve got to keep them a little more grounded.”
On the newcomers and what they will bring to the team:
“I like our point guard Akia Jones. Most of our transfers are at the post position. I think we’ve addressed the much-needed size issue. The size and strength we have at the post is going to make a big difference.”
