TULSA, Okla. – Three Pirates scored in double-figures and Britny Edwards led the charge with a season-high 20 points, but No. 2 seed East Carolina could not overcome 59.1-percent shooting from No. 6 seed Tulsa in the second half as the Golden Hurricane rallied to defeat ECU, 72-59, and advance to the C-USA Championship game against No. 8 seed UCF.
In addition to 20 points, Britny Edwards added a team-best eight rebounds, three blocks, one steal and one assist. Celeste Stewart contributed 12 points, two assists, a pair of steals, and one rebound, while Kyani White recorded her second double-figure performance in as many days with 10 points. Whitny Edwards posted eight rebounds, while Krisine Mial added eight points, and Colleen Marshall led ECU (22-9) with three assists to go along with four points, three boards, and one steal.
Despite trailing early in the first half, the Pirates turned things around on back-to-back jumpers from Britny Edwards to tie the game at 19 with 7:55 left on the clock. After a made free throw from Stewart, Britny Edwards hit a three-point field goal to put ECU up 22-19 with 6:43 remaining in the half. The Pirates went on to close the frame on an 18-3 run as they took a 33-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, the Pirates led by as many as 15 points (42-27) at 16:14, but Tulsa (16-16) slowly chipped away at ECU’s lead. With 3:36 remaining in the game, the Golden Hurricane managed to tie the game at 56 after a made free throw from Mariah Turner. On the next possession, Kelsee Grovey hit a three-point field goal to give Tulsa a 59-56 advantage with 2:51 left to play. In the final two minutes, the Golden Hurricane closed the game on a 9-3 run to claim a 72-59 victory over ECU.
Tulsa was led by Taleya Mayberry, who poured in a game-high 30 points, and Tiffani Couisnard, who notched a double-double as she tallied 17 rebounds and 16 points. Mayberry added three rebounds, a trio of assists, and one steal. Couisnard added a game-high five blocks, three steals and one assist.
The Pirates will find out their postseason opponent and destination on Monday, March 18.
