ECU Dental School Provides Free Clinic In Rural Pitt County Town

Dozens of residents in one rural Pitt County community go some free care courtesy of the ECU School of Dental Medicine, with assistance from the Brody School of Medicine.

2nd year Students and certified dentists with the school saw patients at the Grimesland Community Resource Center, Saturday, who may not have had the opportunity to see a specialist in several years.

“Very important for guys like me. We don’t have insurance, and it’s just like me, I only get a certain amount a week from my unemployment and after you pay your rent and light bill you don’t have nothing left,” said Jimmy Tolar who says he’s been living with mouth pain for a while.

Students like Christin Carter say the experience is invaluable, “It's a good feeling, for us.This is a passion. We've done over 75 hours of community service between this site and the other one over the course of the year it's like the icing on the cake. This is like the final treat is to be able to give these people the care that they need.”

The school also partnered with The Baptist Ministries Dental Bus, and the Grimesland Sunday Free Medical Clinic.
