A dog that possibly fought and killed a rabid raccoon had to be euthanized because it wasn't current on its rabies shots. Pitt County Animal Control says that dog's owner could not afford the alternative, paying to have it quarantined for six months.
On Tuesday, animal control received the report of the raccoon in the homeowner's yard on Askew Road, outside of Farmville. Test results came back Friday that the raccoon had rabies.
Authorities say this is the county's first confirmed case of rabies this year. They say it does highlight the importance of making sure your pets have updated rabies shots.
