A man is charged with attempted murder after Pitt County deputies say he put a pillow over a woman’s head at her home and wrapped an oxygen cord around her neck.
Deputies say Michael Jones of Greenville went to the home of 64-year-old Judy Whitford Friday morning asking for work. He had done yard work and handy work at her home before. Whitford lives outside of Ayden in the Clayroot area.
Deputies say when Whitford told him she didn’t have any work for him Jones then came into her home uninvited. They say Jones forced Whitford into the bedroom, put a pillow over her head, and wrapped an oxygen cord around her neck.
Jones then forced Whitford to write him a check for $450 dollars. He stole her firearm and car.
Whitford then went to the BB & T bank in Greenville and tried to cash the check. A teller noticed there wasn’t a date on the check, so the teller said Jones must go back and get the person to write the date on it in order for them to cash it.
Soon after Jones went back into the bank with the check. The teller thought something was wrong, so the teller checked past signatures and noticed the signature looked different.
The teller then called Whitford’s home. Deputies were still on the scene and once they heard Jones was at the bank, they were able to go to that location and arrest him.
Jones is now in jail under a $2.5 million dollar bond.
Jones is charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, breaking and entering, larceny of a firearm, and larceny of a motor vehicle
