UPDATE: Pitt County Woods Fire Contained

The Staton House Fire Department says a large debris fire off Old Pactolus Road in Greenville was contained by about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday. Rex Fleming with the Staton House Fire Department says no nearby homes or people were harmed, but the cause of the fire is still unknown. He says several mobile homes back in the woods, which had been abandoned because of flooding, were causing large amounts of smoke and ash to spread into several local neighborhoods.

The Forest Service plowed around the fire and put a barrier around it.

PREVIOUS STORY:
A woods fire is burning out of control just north of Greenville this afternoon.

Flames are deep in the woods behind Mayes Trailer Park, which is off Old Pactolus Road.

There are multiple homes adjacent to those woods and several people were seen grabbing what they could out of their homes, just in case the fire spread.

Multiple fire departments and North Carolina Forestry units are at the scene.

A Pactolus Firefighter says it's just a woods fire, but a resident at the mobile home park says it was started at an abandoned trailer. "We see like a bunch of smoke coming up in the air and everybody's coming in driving in and trying to see what's going on," Yasma Grimes told us.

Crews are still trying to determine how the fire began.
