The Pitt County Sheriff's Office says its recent crackdown to locate parents they say are dodging their child support payments resulted in serving 200 warrants and collecting more than $50,000.
Operation Support Your Child had been going on for the past month.
Sheriff Neil Elks says they were able to find 163 people, with less than 60 still on the run. In addition to the money already collected, Elks expects much more from upcoming court dates. "In the end I think it would make our community a safer place. It's going to teach these kids that somebody does love them, that the parent is being responsible and not only financial. I think they'll step up and be a parent in their everyday life."
Elks says thanks to the community, they received a lot of calls to help locate these dead beat parents.
