A driver who hit a wet patch of grass ended up in a watery ditch overnight.
Greenville police were called to Forest Hills Drive, just off of Greenville Blvd. near Charles around 1 a.m. Friday. However, the driver reported he went into the ditch closer to 11:30 p.m.
The driver said he "panicked" when he saw what he thought was a dog or a cat in the road and veered onto a patch of grass headed north on Forest Hills toward Greenville Blvd. He didn't know that about 12 feet off the road is a 12 foot deep ditch.
The Audi ended up on its side, and the driver said the car started to fill with water. Police say there is about four to five feet water in the ditch right now. The car landed on the passenger side, and the driver was able to push open the driver side door to escape. Fortunately, he was not injured.
People in the neighborhood say the heard the screeching tires, but when they looked outside, they didn't see the car. The ditch was so deep that unless you were looking for the car, it was not really visible in the dark of night.
Police cited the driver for reckless driving.
