Police now say the driver critically injured in Tuesday afternoon's crash on Memorial Drive in Greenville has died.
The man has been identified as 32-year-old Ash Smith of Ayden. East Carolina University says Smith was a current student, while Pitt Community College says the man was a 2010 graduate.
The accident happened around 1:15 p.m. at Memorial and U.S. 264.
Police say Smith's vehicle was stopped at the red light on Memorial when a oncoming Jeep struck his vehicle.
The accident closed northbound traffic on the busy highway for almost 2 hours.
According to PCC, Smith was on track to graduate next semester from ECU with a double major in physics and mechanical engineering. He was featured in PCC's career Focus magazine in the spring of 2011.
Police say the crash remains under investigation.

A major Greenville thoroughfare has reopened after a serious accident partially shut it down this afternoon. Police now say one of the drivers has not died, as earlier reported.
Authorities say the crash happened around 1:15 p.m. on North Memorial Drive at the U.S. 264 on ramp. Greenville police say northbound traffic on Highway 11 was shut down until 3:00 p.m.
Police at first told WITN that the driver of one of the vehicles was killed, but Sgt. Joe Friday says that person is still alive, though critically injured.
Friday says a silver Honda heading north on Memorial was stopped at the light and a Jeep slammed into the back of the vehicle. The vehicle ended up in the median.
The Jeep's driver was sent to Vidant Medical Center with unknown injuries.
