Greenville is preparing for any impacts tropical storm Andrea brings. The city wants people to prepare for the worst just in case. A tropical storm advisory was sent out Thursday by the city, warning residents of some possible road closures. Areas prone to flooding are listed below.
Zachary Robinson wasn't pleased when he heard he and his family could be boxed in, even though they live on one of the city's most-traveled streets.
"Of course you know, I'm concerned about my own safety, but you know, this is the center of the city here, this is the center of the university campus. And to have the main street that passes through the university campus closed down because of flooding....it really doesn't make sense," said Robinson.
Greenville Utilities says it is carefully monitoring the path of Tropical Storm Andrea and does not anticipate extreme conditions, but is prepared for whatever comes our way.
The City is anticipating the possibility of localized flooding and street closures through Friday due to heavy rains forecast by the National Weather Service. Flood-prone areas along Green Mill Run typically force the closure of several major streets in heavy rain events.
Drivers are encouraged to drive safely in heavy rains and be on the lookout for closed roads. In the event of the closure of any of these roads, alternate routes for traffic are included with each location:
Charles Boulevard (possible closure north and south bound from 14th St. to Greenville Blvd.)
Alternate Route: Elm St. (via 5th St. or Greenville Blvd.) or Memorial Dr. (via 14th St/Farmville Blvd. or Arlington Blvd.)
14th Street (possible closure east and west bound from Charles Blvd. to Elm St.)
Alternate Route: Greenville Blvd/ (via Elm St. or Memorial Dr.) or 5th St. (via Elm St. or Memorial Dr.)
Evans Street (possible closure north and south bound from Arlington Blvd to Howell St.)
Alternate Route: Memorial Dr. (via 14th St./Farmville Blvd. or Arlington Blvd.) or Elm St. (via 5th St. or Greenville Blvd.)
10th Street (possible closure east and west bound from Charles Blvd. to Elm St.)
Alternate Route: 5th St. (via elm St or Charles Blvd.) and/or Greenville Blvd. (via Memorial Dr. or Elm St.)
Fire Tower Road (possible closure east and west bound from Evans St. to Corey Rd.)
Alternate Route: Greenville Blvd. (via Arlington Blvd.) and/or Greenville Blvd. (via Evans St.)
The City of Greenville asks for drivers to allow extra travel time to destinations in case the rains cause flooding and road closures, and says please remember that if a road is flooded and you cannot see the road or pavement markings, do not drive through the water. Sometimes you cannot see that the road is damaged or washed away and as little as 8 inches of water can cause a vehicle to float.
To report flooded roads, call the Greenville Police Department at 252-329-4315.
If the storm does cause power outages or other system damage, customers are asked to call GUC's Emergency Hotline: 1-855-767-2482. GUC will provide regular updates on its website and Twitter page www.twitter.com/guc_info.
