Business Heats Up For Air Conditioning Repairmen

The hot weather is heating up business for air conditioning repairmen.

Owners at Blount and Williams Heating and Air Conditioning in Greenville say business has increased by a third over last year's numbers. They say service technicians are averaging about 80 calls a week, and say the hot temperatures are putting a lot of wear and tear on air conditioning units.

Technicians say it's been a dry summer, which means loose dirt and grass gets sucked into air conditioners, causing them to run inefficiently. Blount and Williams owners say if the hot weather continues, they'll have to hire more workers.

Technicians say it's important to have your air conditioning unit serviced every year so that it runs its best and keeps you cool.

I beg to differ. In HVAC units, like everything else, you get what you pay for. While some brand names get too proud of themselves (as with any product), you also can't go get something that is a teeny fraction of the cost on those and expect the same performance from them. The best thing you can do for yourself though is proper maintenance - CHANGE THE FILTER regularly!

If you're facing a new replacement for your central air, most A/C units are created equal...that is, the parts/motors/circuit boards are basically the same. There isn't a unit out there that is that much better than another. They're all fairly equal. Don't pay extra for a big name.

OK - so back in the winter we had a problem with our unit. One service guy told us we needed to replace a fan (at $400). We had to think about it. The next day, another service guy FROM THE SAME COMPANY came by to talk to us, took a look at the unit, replaced a capacitor for $40 and it has run like a champ ever since. Just sayin'.......
