Murdered 2-Year-Old Remembered At Funeral

Just 45 people sat inside English Chapel Free Will Baptist Church to remember a 2-year-old who was murdered earlier this month.

Da'jon Roundtree was dressed in a red and black hoodie,baseball hat and a pacifier in his mouth. Pastor V.B. Phillips says the hoodie was used to concealed some of the child's injuries.

The toddler's gold and white casket was surrounded with white carnations, red roses, and yellow blooms.

Pastor Phillips says the family continues to cope with the lose of Da'jon's father who died two years ago and now the death of his son.

Authorities say the child died July 3rd in a trailer that his mother and her boyfriend shared in Grimesland. His body wasn't discovered until three days later when Virginia authorities notified Pitt County deputies about a possible death.

The child's mother, Denise Garcia and her boyfriend, Steven Foreman, are both charged with murder and felony child abuse.

Da'jon will be laid to rest later today in Bethel.

A Pitt County judge set hefty bonds for a mother and her boyfriend who are accused of killing a two year old boy one week ago.

Steven Foreman and Denise Garcia are both charged with the murder of Da'jon Roundtree and felony child abuse.

A judge set Foreman's bond at $5,051,000 while Garcia's bond was set at $5,050,000.

The two were brought back from Virginia Thursday afternoon after going to authorities in Caroline County, VA to report the death of the toddler. Deputies found the boy wrapped in a blanket in the couple's Grimesland trailer.

An autopsy says Da'jon died from a non-accidental head injury that happened Friday night. The Medical Examiner says the child died the next morning.

The couple's next court date is July 28th.

An autopsy shows a two year old boy, found dead Tuesday morning in a Grimesland trailer, died from non-accidental head trauma.

Da'jon Roundtree was found dead, wrapped in a blanket, at his mother and her boyfriend's trailer.

Steven Foreman and Denise Garcia are now both charged with murder and felony child abuse. The two were arrested in Caroline County, Virginia Tuesday and returned to Pitt County around 12:10 p.m. Thursday.

The Medical Examiner's Office says the toddler was injured the night of July 2nd and died the next morning. The death is listed as a homicide.

Authorities say Foreman and Garcia had left Pitt County after the child was found dead Saturday morning. They stopped in Virginia to report the death and that's when authorities there alerted Pitt County deputies to check the trailer.

Manning says Garcia is the mother of the child, while Foreman is her boyfriend. The couple was with the woman's four year old, who is now back in Pitt County under DSS protective custody. That child told authorities that she only had bread and water for several days while the adults were buying beer.

Garcia was originally only charged with felony child abuse, but the murder charge was added when she was returned to Pitt County.

Steven Foreman has been charged with murder and felony child abuse while Denise Garcia has been charged with felony child abuse. The two were arrested in Caroline County, Virginia Tuesday.

Pitt County authorities say the couple was driving through Virginia when they stopped and decided to talk with a magistrate about the accidental death of the 2 year old.

Sheriff Mac Manning says that's when they got the call from Virginia to check on the toddler's welfare. Manning says while they're still waiting for autopsy results, but the child had obvious injuries. Investigators say they found Roundtree's lifeless body wrapped in a blanket on a bed.

Manning says Garcia is the mother of the child, while Foreman is her boyfriend. The couple was with the woman's four year old, who is now back in Pitt County under DSS protective custody. That child told authorities that she only had bread and water for several days while the adults were buying beer.

Both Foreman and Garcia are being held in Virginia until their return to Pitt County.

Pitt County deputies say the child, who was two years and four months old, was found dead Tuesday morning at a home on Moores Lane in Grimesland. The sheriff's office says the child was left there dead for days.

Steven Foreman has been charged with murder and felony child abuse while Denise Garcia has been charged with felony child abuse.

Pitt County Sheriff Mac Manning says, "Preliminary observations by the Pitt County Medical Examiner's Officer indicate there were injuries prior to death, exactly what those injuries are or what did or didn't contribute to the child's death has yet to be determined."

Deputies say they received a call from the Caroline County, Virginia Sheriff's Office Tuesday morning asking them to check on the welfare of a child at the home. Detectives found the child dead and the man and woman were detained by Virginia authorities.

The Pitt County Department of Social Services is working with Virginia Social Services to take other children into protective custody.
