Another deadline has come and gone, and that means Neil Elks is one step closer to becoming Pitt County Sheriff.
Elks beat incumbent Mac Manning in the May primary.
Unaffiliated candidates had until noon Friday to submit a petition with signatures of more than 4,100 voters to get on the ballot. Pitt County elections officials say no one filed.
There is also a write-in option. For someone to become a qualified write-in candidate, the board of elections must receive a petition of 100 registered voters by noon on August fourth.
