Greenville City Council is one step closer to enacting a law that will determine where nightclubs can open.
Councilwoman Marion Blackburn says the ordinance would keep nightclubs from opening within 500 feet of single-family neighborhoods.
She says the law would help keep neighborhoods quiet, and says it would also help with nightclub operations.
Blackburn says by opening further away from residential areas, nightclubs would be less likely to get a lot of noise complaints - meaning owners could focus more on their businesses.
Some people living in residential neighborhoods say they're glad council is considering the ordinance.
Councilwoman Blackburn says the city's planning and zoning commission approved the ordinance Tuesday night.
She says city council will hold a public hearing and vote on the ordinance in August.
