Attorney: No Violations In Pitt Sheriff's Race

An attorney for Pitt County says there are no violations of the law when it comes to campaign practices by Sheriff Mac Manning.

Attorney Janis Gallagher was looking into complaints from Manning's opponent, Neil Elks, about how signs were stored in the sheriff's office and in Manning's personal truck.

Gallagher says there is some political activity that is inseparable from the job and she is not aware of any situation where laws have been violated.

Jean, people arent "hiding" behind the computer screen. DUH that was some comment you made.People arent slandering Mr. Elks. Evidently you dont see the mud slinging and that is very surprising. Whether you want to admit it or not, he has not run a very nice campaign. Mr. Manning however has. At first I wasnt for or against either one until the mud started slinging. Then I lost respect for Elks so he will not get my vote.

For those of you who want to slander Mr. Elks, have you taken the time to meet with him or attend one of his events? He is very approachable and would take the time to answer questions. It's easy to hide behind this computer screen and throw out ugly remarks, isn't it? I hope that when he becomes our new sheriff, you will support him in a courteous manner. I think it is wonderful that he will be out in the county working beside the deputies.

I voted for Mr. Neil Elks yesterday. He will make an outstanding sheriff. He is dedicated, knowledgeable, honest and has a heart for the citizens. Criticize him if you want to - he would be the first person to help you if you had a problem.

What is illegal about the man having his campaign signs in his own truck? Also note that all politicians campaign with taxpayers money on taxpayers time and on taxpayers property. When can a Sheriff campaign on 'his' time? The Sheriff is always on duty. He doesn't punch a clock when he goes home. The Sheriff's dept is only as good as the deputies he has. Sometimes there are bad apples in the bunch. You can find those in every public (and private) job sector. The bad apples make everyone look bad. Mac may have had a few bad apples but I believe that overall he and his dept have done a lot of good things as well. They don't seem to come out in a campaign because the other guy always has to make himself look better so he can get elected. Sometimes the only way to make himself look better is to make someone else look bad. Keep up the good work Mr. Manning. Good luck.

At first I considered voting for Elks. I changed my mind very quickly when I saw the mud slinging he & his campaign people were doing. I admire Mr.Manning for not stooping to their level which is an all time low. Neil, how can you clean up the sheriff's dept if you cant clean up your campaign. Your a grown man, act like one!!!! Enough mud slinging people arent impressed!

Elks and his followers will try anything to get elected. The people of this county are too smart to fall for his petty, childish behavior. I guess he gets his advise from his Raleigh Liberal Democrat Manager

Elks running a dirty campaign? Not when you consider it was Mac who took out a full page add in the paper to 'clarify' suspicions about his leadership surrounding crooked officers. In that article, he clearly threw Elks in the fire by blaming him for the botched death investigation of his deputies husband. Mac committed political suicide with that article. Elks is tame in comparison.

Elks has already turned me off with this campaign. I will not votes for him.
