Fire Destroys Pitt County Home

A fire Wednesday afternoon destroyed a Pitt County home.

Volunteer fire crews were called to the home at 748 Old Snow Hill Road, that's outside of Ayden around 12:45 p.m. The fire ripped through the roof of the single story home.

Authorities say the couple who lived at the home were not there when the fire broke out and its cause is still under investigation. No one was injured in battling the fire.

Kim, My daughters and I know this family and I want to commend the Ayden Volunteer Fire Department for their quick response and their dedication in containing this fire and putting it out. It was not their fault that no more could be saved. The fire spread very quickly and they did their very best. The emotional and financial distress that this family is going through is beyond comprehension, and they appreciate all the Ayden Volunteer Fire Department did. Now is the time to get this family back on their feet and into a home again. It's not the time to start bashing anyone. God Bless You, AVFD!! And thank you!

In Response to Kim, I would hope that you would get your facts right before you post such untruths to the public. We were dispatched at 12:42 Enroute at 12:47 and arrived at 12:52. We had the fire out in about 30 minutes or less with overhaul done in about an hour. This is from a volunteer Fire department, where we have to leave our jobs and go the the Fire Station and respond. Yes Winterville's Engine did arrive on scene first, but they have a paid fireman that is there during daytime hours and did not have to leave his job and respond, but our Engine arrived right behind theirs. Please get your facts right first as you don't need to cause this family any more anguish than they alread have endured. The Fire Chief

I live right up the street and the sad part is that it took Ayden Fire department to get there in 45 minutes, winterville made it here before Ayden did.I just wonder what could have been more saved if Ayden had a shorter response time. I will pray for the family.
