Some Parents And Students Rally Wanting School Principal Removed

Saturday was full of emotions and anger as Grifton Elementary School parents and students spoke out about all the issues that are going on behind closed doors.

Several people came out to the Grifton Town Common demanding some type of change at the top of their school.

The problem sparked after the softball coach Haywood Dillahunt was suspended three weeks ago.

Ever since parents and students have been asking the question why? School officials have no given a direct answer citing personnel issues.

Many parents feel the issues at the school go far beyond the coach. Most of the crowd that gathered in Grifton wants school principal Ronda Sortino and her staff removed.

Sarah Carr who is a student at the school explained how she feels.

"I actually don't know how she feels about the subject but I don't think she really cares about the students," Carr said Saturday.

Organizers say they are going to take this process step by step.

The first of which is the petition signed by students and parents that will be given to the Pitt County School Board in efforts to hire a new principal.

There are issues there...I was let go...I was never asked to discuss the situation with her as the manual shows. I enjoy my job with other areas in the school sytem so I just let it go...had to pick and choose my battles on this one...very sad. I think she has good ideas for some things but something else within her is going on. Just praying for the situation.

There is a facebook group that has been started in an effort to find out answers across all of Pitt County. It's just getting started and they are asking for all parents, students, and citizens that are interested in trying to find out what is going on in all the schools in this county. There are far too many problems all over. Not just in this one school. It's called Pitt Area Citizens for Education. Maybe they are onto something with trying to unite all parents, students, and citizens into one voice.

to parent. I too pay taxes and help pay their salary and am looking for the truth. I know there is a problem but I just am not sure what it is or where its coming from. Today is my first time visiting this site but with all the info up here that either doesn't make any common sense or has nothing to do with any thing I don't think I will find it up here. I guess I will have to try to find the truth somewhere else.

To "at last", I'm a tax-payer that helps pay the principal's and staff's check each month. So, to answer your question, as long as they are all receiving a chunk of my hard earned money, I'm the one that will keep looking for the truth.

To parent. Great advice!!!! Just one question. Which one are you the leader or the follower?

I am amazed that grown adults are up here going back and forth like the K-8 children they teach! What kind of example are you setting for them? As a parent, I could care less who is taking a break to smoke a cig. If I had to work under this principal, I'd probably be a 2 packer a day by now. What I DO care about is the fact that this principal put MY children in danger. They are my most precious gift from God. I also DO care that she has broken FEDERAL guidelines, and could cost the school and the rest of the county money next school year. I DO care that teachers are using instructional time, while they let students copy notes from a board, to play games online. I DO care that Dillahunt was suspended for one thing, while the baseball coach is getting away with the EXACT same thing. (yes, he had 2 players hit in the head resulting in black eyes). Teacher's that are commenting...GROW UP. You're looking like fools. "To follow a fool, is to be a fool yourself."

And the adults are still up here talking about things that are irrelevant to if the pricipal is doing her job or not..I am starting to think its the staff thats getting up here trying to tell on one another..(I think one of them would be "makes no sense" but anyways After hearing and seeing the evidence of some of the calls she makes you can't honestly say that Sortino has been making good decisions! If you were a principal at a school that was k-8 and there had been a shooting right there by the school in which a man had been killed and the suspect had not been caught yet would you or would you not have put that school on lockdown..I mean I don't know about the other parents but I want to feel like my child is safe when he goes to school not have to worry about whether a murderer could possibly get into the school. What if he had got into the school and killed one of the students one that could have possibly been one of your children!!

To the last few comments posted you all are supposed to be adults and you are all acting like children...this issue regarding the principal is about whether she is doing what need to be done for our children....we as parents need to be more concerned about our children and not with the other parents and teachers!!!!...It looks like to me some of the staff that is up here posting these ridiculious and childish comments should be evaluated as well as the principal. people need to quit trying to divert the attention from the real issue which is the students and how they feel about their principal. it is interesting that you read comments both for and against the principal written by adults. I have yet to read a comment from a student who has anything positive to say about her.

Its not which is worse. Its if Sortino is so by the book why did she allow someone to leave during the day to do her a personal favor when she comes down on every one else so hard?
