New Info: 10 Week Old Suffering From Brain Injury, Mother Charged

Authorities released new information about a mother accused of abusing her 10 week old baby.

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office says 27 year old Sandy Etheridge shook her son Dakota so violently he has brain injuries and is in critical condition at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

According to authorities, Etheridge was with her son all morning of the 22nd then left the child in the custody of her roommate once he arrived home.

Detectives say the roommate discovered the baby wasn't breathing and then ran across the street to the neighbors home.

Roger Vandiford says his neighbor yelled to call 911 as he held the lifeless baby in his arms.

Authorities say Etheridge has four other children that have been taken away by Department of Social Services.

It's unknown why they were removed from the home.

Previous Story:

An infant is in the pediatric intensive care unit at Pitt County Memorial hospital suffering from multiple inter-cranial bleeds and also from retinal hemorrhaging that authorities say was caused by his mother.

The Pitt County Sheriff's office charged 27 year-old Sandy Etheridge of Greenville with felony child abuse. They say the 10 week old child has a brain injury caused by cutting off oxygen to the brain.

The incident remains under investigation.

Etheridge is in the Pitt County Detention Center under a one million dollar bond.

Just a thought - I agree with you! DSS does try to do all they can but their hands are tied - when indiviudauls refuse to step up to testify what they have seen or heard. Would anyone on here - want DSS to show up at the door to remove their children without sufficient evidence or proof - I think not! DSS is bound by what it can prove not by suspicions or allegations. Pray for baby, Dakota & hope that his injuries will allow him to recover and be all that God intended him to be.

As far as DSS calling before they go to your home BS. Someone made a false charge on my family nearly 4 yrs ago and there was no call just wasted time when they could've been handling true complaints. True or Not, through the Grapevine, I heard that DSS tried to take this child, however a Pitt Co Judge wouldn't sign the papers. Maybe He should have his name available so that when we all go to vote we can have that information. DSS can't be in every home all the time they do the best they can with the case load they carry. DSS didn't hurt this baby, they did all they could legally do. Some say stricter laws, but with that comes a cost. You say stricter now, but when DSS removes children in cases where someone has given lies to them everyone Screams for them to but out. There's never an easy answer. I hope all questions are answered in this case and my prayers will be with all that are involved, Especially Dakota!

I love how the ignorant individuals blame DSS and the system. Blame the trash that almost killed this innocent baby.It should be illegal for people like Sandy to reproduce. There is a special place in hell for individuals like Sandy. God bless that poor baby.

For everyone who does not know the facts: 1. There were CPS reports made. 2. The social worker couldn't do any more then what was being done. 3. This child is suffering terribly. Save your whining hatred of either Sandy or DSS, and put it to some good use. Email your congressman, write them, contact lawmakers, but do not complain about an agency that has its hands tied. Yes, DSS will be in your business if you give them a reason to... GET OVER IT!

My thoughts exactly Shelly! It appears that an agency is hiding behind a "policy book" that is subject to the interpretation of the decision-maker. I guess that is how they sleep at night.

Pitt Co. DSS needs to rally together and change this policy if that's why this woman continues to keep children. Put YOUR energy into protecting these children and change the policies. You can do it as easily as the public can.

First of all, this is one sick woman...obviously she has a past history of violence or for DSS,it is one of the most useless organizations on earth...if you need a service, you can't get it;but if you don't need them, they stick their noses in every aspect of your life...Totally useless, typical government run organization that is a waste of taxpayer money....Feel so sorry for this innocent baby....Can't wait to see what KARMA does to the biological creature that gave birth to this baby.
