A man is recovering at PCMH after falling in an elevator at his job.

Fire crews say they responded to Southern States on fields street in Farmville about 11 Wednesday night.

A fire official says when they arrived they found the man sitting in the elevator and he was conscious.

It's not clear what caused the elevator to fall anywhere from 10 to 50 feet down the building.

People who have been to the complex and say they rode on the elevator tell WITN the it's not modern and really old.

The elevator passed a recent state inspection in September. No word yet on the name of the man who fell or the extent of his injuries.

Previous Story:

A worker from Southern States in Farmville remained in the hospital Thursday after the elevator he was on malfunctioned and dropped to the ground level, according to company officials.

Steve Patterson, Vice President of Corporate Marketing and Communications for Southern States, says the company has launched a "full force investigation" into the incident Wednesday night.

The elevator is one that carries people, and something caused it to malfunction, Patterson said.

Authorities in Pitt County say they got the first call for help at 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Glen Fisher, who works at the Farmville site of Southern States, tells WITN the worker was freed after getting trapped in the elevator, and crews took him to Pitt County Memorial Hospital. The name of the worker has not been released, and company officials said they did not know the extent of his injuries.

"We take safety very, very seriously," Patterson said. "We won't rest until we find out what happened and we fix it."

Patterson said the company was sending in an investigator all the way from Kentucky to help with the investigation.

Southern States in Farmville employs about 40 people between its animal feed and seed/crop protection divisions, according to the Town of Farmville website.

State records with the Department of Labor show the elevator at Southern States was installed in 1991. It was last inspected in September, and no violations were found.
