Man In Fair Condition After Accident In Pitt County

A bizarre accident Friday morning, sent one man to the hospital.

It happened just after 10:30 on Greenville Boulevard Extension and Sherman Drive, near the Grande Movie Theatre.

Officers say 64 year old John Dixon was traveling west in his BMW when he tried to change lanes and lost control.

Witnesses say Dixon somehow swerved from the far left lane to the right lane, before hitting a curb, flipping several times and crashing into a barbed wire fence.

Police say Dixon was alert but had a head injury and was taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital where he is listed in fair condition.

He was charged with careless and wreckless driving.

....everyone puts such emphasis on cell phones or texting while driving. I certainly agree and support laws against this but I don't understand why the laws don't go on to include putting on make-up, eating, drinking, reading books and newspapers.....yes, you can ride down nearly any road in town and see most of this on a daily basis. People should be banned from doing anything other than driving while driving!! The article doesn't say he was on a cell phone and maybe he wasn't, but my point is still valid. I go to Raliegh several times a month and on most trips I pull up along side of at least one if not more vehicles where the driver is reading the paper or a book with cruise going about 75 MPH. That's the guy that needs to be ticketed.....or maybe someone should pull over into his lane and slam on brakes in front of him....wake up call!

I do not know the reason for this accident, but could a cell phone be in the mix...a law to banish talking on a cell phone is waaayyyyy over due...it is just as bad as being intoxicated while driving...i hope the person involved will recover and the injuries are not for life...thank God it was not worse.

Barbed Wire Fence! Talk about unlucky...that's insult to injury. Poor guy, I guess it's time to hang that cell phone up.
