Pitt County Students Lose Memorial Day Holiday

Pitt County students will lose their Memorial Day holiday, thanks to Wednesday's snow. The school system also says students will report as normal on Thursday.

The school system announced that due to the March 3rd snow day, classes will be held on Monday, May 31st. Pitt County Schools say by law it cannot use an upcoming teacher workday on March 29th as a make-up day .

The school system says it's going to take all reasonable efforts to preserve Spring Break that is designated for April 5th through the 9th.

Dear Poor English, I was responding to another post. I was not complaining about the school year. Dear Dave, Please remember that "so-called faculty members" have been educating, and continue to educate the members of respected professions. The topic is Memorial Day not bash teachers who spend days, nights, and weekends working for the students of Pitt County.

To everyone that supports the school systems decision to take away Memorial Day... how hard is it to come up with a simple solution: add one extra day to the end of the school year.... It is not right to take away a holiday such as this one. This decision was just down right stupid!!!

Hey Poor English, maybe if these kids WENT TO SCHOOL instead of skipped, OR if these so called faculty members didn't take 3 weeks off each year for "work" days, perhaps the English on this forum would be better.

I think I'll sue. It discrimated aginst my child's right to a day loafing. One day less to wear their colors. But hey they are safe.

All the poor English in many of these posts make it seem as if the parents of the students that are complaining need to go back to school and learn proper sentence structure! And to "Teacher" have you seen Asian societies where they go to school for 6 days a week for most of the year. They are far superior to us when it comes to math and science and sooner or later that will come to bite us in the behind. I think the 180 day schedule is fine the way it is.

i feel that pitt county is THAT scary that they have to close the schools b/f it starts snowing...i understand that that type of weather is not that common down here, but come on. the kids could have went to school. i don't think it's fair to take that holiday knowing alot of families go out of town that weekend or have reunions. we won't be in north carolina and the bad thing about it is, my daughter has perfect attendance and doesn't want to miss school, but she doesn't want to miss the family vacation either. why not have school on saturday? is there something that we can do to fight this? board of ed needs to reconsider!!!

Pitt County Schools leave a lot to be desired. My child attends public schools and I have not been impressed with the system at all! A delay may have been needed yesterday but there was no reason at all to cancel school. They can't ever seem to get it right. When kids shouldn't be on the roads they make them go to school. Makes no sense at all! We need new Board Members appointed that can make smart decisions!

Students and Teachers are required to attend school more days than ever. I imgaine that when you were a kid, you were out of school June, July, and August. That is not the case anymore. The students and teachers of Pitt County work very hard. Half days for students are used as staff development days for teachers. As teachers, we have to jump through so many hoops just to keep our jobs so these staff development days are important so that we can receive credit hours. I don't agree with Memorial Day being used. Every year, we teach the importance and sacredness of that day and what it really means. By scheduling school on that day, it really does lose the meaning of what has been taught. I hope that every school schedules rememberance programs that day so that the students get the full meaning of what Memorial Day is really about.

its not like the kids are ever in school now anyway. everytime i turn around they have a half day or a teacher work day or a holiday. it is definately not like it was when i was in school. i bet if you look at how many complete weeks of school they have it is less than how many short weeks they have. and you wonder what is wrong with kids these days.
