The family of a former ECU student says the Marine reservist has died of injuries he suffered in an attack last week in Afghanistan.
Sgt. David Smith's cousin Ann Rudd told a Frederick, Maryland newspaper that the 25-year-old Marine died Tuesday. The Defense Department hasn't yet announced the death publicly.
Rudd says military officials have told the family that Smith was wounded in a bombing Saturday in Helmand province that killed at least two others from the Frederick-based 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion Company B.
She says Smith was a 2002 graduate of Frederick High School. Smith is a former student at East Carolina University. He was last enrolled in Spring of 2009.
His Facebook page says Smith was an industrial technology student at ECU.
