Family Says Former ECU Student Dies In Afghanistan

The family of a former ECU student says the Marine reservist has died of injuries he suffered in an attack last week in Afghanistan.

Sgt. David Smith's cousin Ann Rudd told a Frederick, Maryland newspaper that the 25-year-old Marine died Tuesday. The Defense Department hasn't yet announced the death publicly.

Rudd says military officials have told the family that Smith was wounded in a bombing Saturday in Helmand province that killed at least two others from the Frederick-based 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion Company B.

She says Smith was a 2002 graduate of Frederick High School. Smith is a former student at East Carolina University. He was last enrolled in Spring of 2009.

His Facebook page says Smith was an industrial technology student at ECU.

    Is anyone on the ECU staff keeping a record of ECU graduates who serve in the armed forces, especially those who lose their lives in the service? It's not clear from the WITN story that Sgt. Smith is a graduate but his name certainly deserves to be memorialized at ECU.
