Man Nabbed In Botched Pitt County Robbery

Deputies say a man who they say swung a knife at a clerk during an botched robbery turned himself in Wednesday morning.

Matthew Harris was wanted for Tuesday night's attempted robbery at the Chicod Food Mart on Highway 43 South in Pitt County. Deputies say when the store refused to allow Harris to pay for gas with a check, the 34-year-old man came back in a few minutes later wearing a blue hoodie and armed with a knife.

According to authorities, Harris swung the knife in a threatening manner at the cashier, but no money was ever handed over. Warrants have been issued for Harris on attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a deadly weapon.

The same store was robbed back in September, and there was a stabbing in the parking lot last month.

hey theres no comparison to the robberies of other stories with gun wielding thugs. those gun wielding thugs were a little smarter (just a little now, because its not saying much) than this fellow. though he was lucky he didnt get shot dead--he must not get the news channel.

Im pretty sure it is considered attempted robbery when they demand money from the register! This guy was STUPID! You hand the cashier a check with your name on it and then put on a hoodie and pull out a knife..uhh yeah youre going to jail bud!! Im glad it turned out this way and the cashier handled the situation correctly! This could have been worse....Note to WITN..You guys left out some of the details

The clerk would certainly been justified if they had shot this guy. He was swinging a knife, which put their life in jeopardy, just like the off duty officer was in fear of his life when the criminal pulled a gun to rob him. The gun being a toy is of no consequence...the officer was in fear of his life and both, in my opinion, would have been justifiable.

What would you people say if the cashier would have pull out a gun and shot him in the chest several times? Would it have been justified? His check was probably no good that is why the person did not accept it. So he gets mad and come back with a knife . Yeah that's different. It is not like the kid who tried to rob the off duty officer with a fake gun. Yeah this man is innocent.

Are people these days incapable of thinking at all? I would call him just a dumb animal, but that would be an insult to animals.
