Larry, Registering of firearms is not required in NC, and in fact, in many counties, the Sheriff's office doesn't even have the ability to do it effectively. I am a law-abiding gun owner with a concealed carry permit (meaning, I have extensive training, have been fingerprinted, and had an FBI AND NC SBI backgroud check) and I carry every day--sometimes concealed, but usually openly. I ALWAYS carry open when I'm in Greenville shopping or on business. And I've NEVER been a "target" of any criminal. Perhaps my exercising of my 2nd amendment rights is causing all these thugs to take their business elsewhere... I own several firearms (rifles, shotguns, pistols), and have never registered ANY of them, nor do I intend to do so. I have also never committed any crimes, in all of my 44 years of life. If you want to see where gun registration leads, just look at Poland in the late 1938, or England over the lase 20 years. What we need to do is ENFORCE the laws we already have, not make more.

Riber Bluff Drive used to house students back in the 1970's. Now it is a completely different clientele. If you don't believe me, just go get gas at the Wilco-Hess across the street. But you might not want to go late at night. The other day I bought gas there, and the guy held my fifty dollar bill up to the light. I asked him why and he said because of so much phony money being passed in the store. Also, people from across the street walk over to get one beer, and sometimes they are wearing bedroom slippers. Go figure.

Audra, You are correct in saying that tougher gun laws are not the answer. Criminals don't care about laws because they are criminals. What needs to be stiffened are the penalties for carrying an unregistered gun or concealed weapon without a permit. These are the guns being used in the random violence of gangs and thugs. If anyone is caught with such an unregistered weapon it is there for only one purpose. I say they should be locked up and during the day put to work at HARD physical labor on the state's infrastructure for a couple of years. If they repeat just shoot them with whatever weapon they have illegally.

How does making tougher gun *laws* change anything? I get so sick and tired of hearing this arguement made. Clue.. criminals obtain and use firearms in an illegal manner, ergo they DO NOT CARE what the laws are. Duh? All you do by tightening restrictions is make it more difficult for properly trained and responsible citizens to legally obtain what they need for defense against those criminals. This isn't rocket science. Do you think some mugger is sitting around his TV waiting to hear if his next planned assault is permitted by a gun law or not?

When will it stop. I can almost bet that the person or people that did this shooting already have a record and probably a gun charge. Wake of lawmakers. There are people who sell drugs and get life sentences but those who kill or attempt to kill that will probably get a year or two come out and go right back for an even worst charge. There is a need to set an example. Take some of these hard head thugs and ship them to fight in the war or some hard time in maxium security. Why is it that violent crime offenders about the same amount of time as people that don't pay child support? They get out and do worst stuff, just as people not paying child support get out and make more babies. This is becoming a weekly event. Almost every teenager in the hood has a gun or knows someone who will loan them a gun. When is somebody going to do something to correct that problem? Make tougher laws on guns and do something with these so called tough young heads.

to y'all who complain about them being out at 3:20am...THEY'RE ADULTS, NOT CHILDREN...despite their behavior. the time of day/night is not the problem. their lack of self-respect, self-worth, ambition, education, and common sense is the problem.

How about GUILIANI for Mayor??? We can't afford him, but he'd clean this dump up real quick. I felt safer when I lived in NY...if only I could afford to move back there, I would. I've never encountered such a mass of degenerates in my life. They're useless and sucking up tax dollars faster than the Senate!

I've always been told by my dad that no good comes from being out after dark in Greenville. He said that since I was old enough to listen. I'm 42 now, and a black family we are.

B, If you look you will see that I said unregistered firearms. I personally do not feel that there is a need to carry a concealed weapon and most countries have far less shootings as a result. However the law here does allow for it and those who are legit will have their weapon registered and a concealed gun permit. If they don't have either then there is only one reason they are packing and it isn't good. They should do hard time doing manual labor like maintaining roads or scraping bridges but make them feel the punishment for carrying an unregistered firearm and no permit.
