Greenville Girl On A Mission To Save Sea Creatures

Casey Sokolovic of Greenville knows you don't have to be an adult to make a difference. Casey has spent the last three years on a mission to help save sea creatures and their habitats. She's only twelve years old.

When she was nine years old, Casey started a sea turtle conservation campaign called L.A.S.T., which stands for "Love A Sea Turtle." Casey says she was inspired to make a difference after visiting the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Topsail Island. And make a difference she has. Casey has raised more than $3,000 for her campaign.

One of the ways Casey has raised money is through selling sea turtle-shaped sugar cookies. Others can support Casey by purchasing a limited edition Casey Kit for $200. For details, click here.

Casey was one of the finalists in the running for Oceana's 2009 "Ocean Heroes" award. Ocean is the largest international organization focused solely on ocean conservation.

What a wonderful thing for her to do! I wish more people would do something no matter what age they are! I have been to the turtle sanctuary as well and would love to help the turtles especially if i lived closer...she is definitely an inspiration to show us anyone can help!

Of course there would only be 3 comments up here including mine! Nothing for anyone to start a fight over. I think it is wonderful, postive and uplifting that this 12 year old has devoted her time to such a great cause! As an animal, beach, ocean critter lover.... I say thankyou to this precious child! I could not agree more with the other comments..we need to hear more stories like this!
