The overcrowding issue is a problem the Pitt County Sheriff's Department is steadily working to fix.
As their new housing facility is slated to open in two months, they've now made headway by opening just a portion of the new jail Tuesday.
While it's not the portion that will alleviate the jail overpopulation problem, it will help the public along with officers in the county.
The booking and magistrate's office is now more stream lined and easier for officers to process inmates.
It also prevents the public from coming in contact with arrestees coming into the facility.
While Sheriff Mac Manning says he'd hoped to have the housing facility open by now, things should be opened by the first of the year.
With the addition of 192 beds, the full capacity of the jail will total almost 600 bunks.
