FIRST ON WITN: Trooper Assault Suspect Has Prior Record

A man who authorities say assaulted a female state trooper on Thanksgiving Day has previous convictions for assaulting women and an officer.

Department of Correction records show Robert Stocks was last in prison in 2004, spending 8 months behind bars for assault on a female. The 29-year-old Ayden man was also convicted of assault on officer/state employee, assault inflicting serious injury, a second assault on female charge, and six drug charges which date back to 2000.

The Highway Patrol says Stocks got into a fist fight with Trooper Amanda Sings as she was trying to arrest him Thanksgiving afternoon.

He is in jail on $200,500 bond for assault on a law enforcement officer, assault with intent to inflict injuries, resisting arrest and driving while impaired.

The assault happened Thursday afternoon on Joe Stocks Road, that's south of Greenville off Highway 43.

Sgt. Gary Weaver says Trooper Amanda Signs was trying to arrest Stocks when both were injured. He said it was a fist fight and no weapons were used. "We are investigating a hit and run on Joe Stocks Road. The trooper found the suspect vehicle and an altercation occurred between the trooper and the suspect." Weaver told WITN.

The Highway Patrol says Stocks punched the trooper in the face several times. She used her mace to try and stop him, but it took four bystanders who stepped in to help to break up the fight.

Trooper Signs was taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital with a broken nose and multiple lacerations and bruises on her face. She was treated and released but will have to have to undergo reconstructive surgery.
