Researchers in England studied SIDS cases between 2003 and 2006, and found co-sleeping was involved in more than half of the cases.
Co-sleeping is when parents sleep next to their babies in a bed or on a couch. Experts say the safest place for a baby to sleep is in a crib, or bassinet next to the parents' bed for the first several months of life.
Pitt County Memorial Hospital says 114 babies died from SIDS between in 2004 and 2008. The total number of sides deaths in North Carolina increased in 2008, with the deaths of 136 babies.
Hospital officials are promoting this slogan to parents: "Stomach to Play. Back to Sleep, For Baby's Safe Sleep."
