Store Clerk Hit As Suspected Shoplifter Makes Getaway

Scary moments for a store clerk at the Greenville Mall Friday morning.

The clerk, 31-year-old Ralph Petway, was hit by a suspected shoplifter's vehicle as the woman was making her getaway.

A witness told WITN News that the woman came out of Rack Room Shoes around 11:45 a.m. with Petway running after her. The woman got into a minivan, but mall security blocked her in. Instead the woman jumped the curb barrier, and her van then struck the clerk.

The woman backed up, and took off. A witness was able to give police her license plate number. Petway fell to the pavement and was sent to Pitt County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The hospital says he has since been released.

Dumb "hot hands" like hers will be dumb enough to come back. You just wait and see.And when she does, let her on in,make her feel comfortable, while someone else already has the Police on the way!!!! But You need to remember that when you're dead and gone, someone else will be going in that store stealing them shoes again. so just think about it buddy, a pair of shoes ain't worth your life!!!! I hope you are feeling better soon!!!!!!!

Pleeease! HE did what was correct he didnt want to pay it out of his check! Apparently some people condone stealing. Stealing is stealing...if you take a dollar that its not your or given to you is stealing! And i'll be completetly honest...the people that work at the mall are in danger all the time because you dont know the creepos that will get some stupid or dangerous idea plus the mall does not have a cameras inside! What kind of precautions is the mall taking? Plus security cant realy put hands on nobody! So people when you go to the mall pretty much you are unprotected and maybe next to someone who will try to steal.

I am so sick of the ignorance all of you keep spouting about. Stereotype and racial epithets are something that you shouldn't even be thinking thoughts such as these much less be so bold as to type them. I am so sick of it! Racism, reverse racism, prejudice, etc. Get over yourselves and get a grip! We are all different! We are not all Native American! We are all imports so get over it! We are all American!!!

Choco asked about the SUSPECT, not the clerk. Sadly, Bill could be right in that the companny could say you overstepped your boundaries and good luck with the chumps at worker's comp.

CHOCO, and before I even visualized the clerks photo, I knew he was white. Only YTs do dumb stuff of that nature. Over a pair of shoes? You would have thought she stole the shoes off of his feet.

Ok,I'm stun because this man going to risk his life, for a pair of shoes..He definitely went over his boundaries because once the accuser made it out the store, into the parking lot,he can't apprehend her.He should of just call the police and gave go description of the make and model of the car and license plate number..I really don't feel sorry for this guy because all of this wasn't call for.I went to Wal-mart one day(Raleigh) and as I was getting out my car,an employee at Wal-mart was basically assaulting a man because he thought he was stealing.Mind you, that I heard the Manager of the store, tell the employee not to never follow someone out the store and definitely never restrain them, once they out the store..People need to stop trying to do the police job. It's alot of crazy people out here.I'm not dying for nobody shoes.

Let me ask the politically incorrect question. Was the suspect black or white? We can eliminate 85% of the population with this one answer. That might help in the search.

I am a big old redneck with a gun, and I have stopped spending my money in Greenville. It will really show up in the next few months, at the cash register.

Cut Fredo some slack. He was just voicing his opinion. A lot of crime comes out of that area. They'll find the vehicle.
