The City Of Greenville Is Tweeting

People in Greenville can start getting updates from the City via Twitter.

City officials say they are starting with three accounts: general city news; emergency alerts; and GREAT bus system updates.

“Some cellular providers charge for incoming text messages,” said Steve Hawley, Communications Manager / Public Information Officer. “The alert feed gives us a way to get more important information out to people who don’t want to have to pay for or receive lots of messages. These will be limited in number to the most important messages so that they can reach you when you’re not at your computer.”

Twitter is a free service.

Gee, what did we do before facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Kindle and other forms of mass information. Those of us who are old enough know that a cell phone is not an essential item. We lived and grew up when one of the main forms of communication between family members, was the time spent around the dinner table. We knew that when the street lights came on, it was time to be home. This overload of forms of "getting the word out" is really quite silly and time wasting. Most people know how to find the news they need, without having it bombard us from every angle. Put down your cell phone for one day. The pease and quiet will be refreshing.
