A man posing as an police officer approached two ECU students, pulled out a gun and attempted to rob them.
East Carolina University Police say it happened around 1:30 Friday morning near Jarvis and 5Th street.
The two students say a man in a silver Honda pulled over and told them he was a police officer. He was not wearing a uniform and didn't have a badge, but he did show them a black handgun.
Officers say the individual frisked the victims, searched their wallets, and finally left without taking a thing.
ECU Police say there are officers in plain clothes patrolling the downtown area, but all should show you a badge.
ECU Assistant Police Chief Dawn Tevepaugh says, "What we encourage anyone to do in a situation like that is to ask to see the police badge. We also carry ID cards so they can ask to see both of those instruments."
