Police Chief: It's Not As Bad As You Think

A recent release of Greenville's crime statistics by the Attorney General showed a three-percent jump for the city in 2008. The Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce sat down with the Greenville Police Chief William Anderson Thursday, to get a better look at those numbers and find out what's being done about crime.

Anderson's message was clear: Greenville does have a crime problem, but it's not as bad as so many think.

"I think it's important that the community gets to hear what we're doing in the police department. They get to address their concerns, and it's important to get information out," Anderson told WITN.

Even though there have been more homicides in Greenville in 2009 than there were all of 2008, the chief says violent crimes are down. However, property crimes are up. Some chamber members said they were happy to see the breakdown of the numbers.

"He did a fine job of dispelling some of the myths. The perception of Greenville in Greenville is not that good. He was really able to break down some of the statistics and put them in a realistic arena," said Chamber Member Allen Smith.

Now, both chamber members and the chief are working to improve that poor perception.

Chief Anderson also said the rest of the community needs to get involved. Communication between the police department and residents is vital, which is why he wants anyone that notices anything suspicious in their area to notify authorities.

The streets are not safe anywhere,so carry a gun to protect yourself against stupid people, such as thugs, gangs, D A. The city of GREENVILLE can spend money to rentavate downtown so it looks pretty but they can't protect the people who pay taxes.ain't that pretty!!!!

Do you think the chief has read these messages? If not, he might think he is doing an outstanding job. He might even think he deserves an award. Somebody should tell him to read these messages.

hahaha... my comment didn't make it the first time, must have been too much truth. this guy needs to be fired from his position in a mad fast hurry. i'm tired of taking care of assault victims & stab victims, & gun shot wound vicitims. i work in the hospital, and the crime rate is outrageous. i agree with whoever said this dude needs to walk downtown after 11pm like the rest of the citizens.

It's not as bad as you think.....it's worse!!! I spent 15 years in and around Greenville. Graduated from ECU, and attempted to make a home there. Thank God I followed and opportunity to leave.. Don't get me wrong, I love ECU, Greenville and the community. However, the underlying problem is the trash from the area that surounds it.

That is a joke... I work in a busy shopping area. We are constantly battling theft and even the officer that responded said they have at least 15 break ins a day.. now you tell me we dont need to do something about it.
